Maintain an environment where you do not show or feel any worry, anger, or excitement.
When you are feeling tense take a deep breath.
This works way more than you may think. Here is a quick story. We went to the vet, Zandra, Bu and me, and for some reason Zandra was super scared! Not normal, so I ended up becoming anxious myself because I did not understand what was wrong. Of course, I did not catch this right away, my feelings that is. Anyway, being that I have pits, my feelings will become anxious a little faster than some, so in a small way society has made owners of Pit Bulls on edge as we need to consistently make sure they are 100% good, otherwise they are “aggressive” in the public eyes and this includes vets. Anyway, so as soon as we were called to the room I noticed how the two dogs were acting and it clicked! I realized I was on edge as well. So I stopped, looked at them, took a deep breath and thought to myself -- chill out. As the butterflies slowed to a stop, I looked at Bu and he instantly calmed right down. I will say that he was not even looking at me at this time and the leash was loose! I was in absolute shock; my hair stood up. I have always read about this and maybe because of the career I am taking, it made me look closely. I cannot explain the absolute feeling of bond between human and dog and the reality of your connection.
