Dog Training & Tug of War

This game can be a dogs game of choice and for the most part is fine. However, if you have a dog with leadership confusion (still needs to learn the rules) then this game should be

AVOIDED

Here is Why:

As you are playing with them and getting close to the end of the game, I would put money on the fact that you will let go and that’s the end. Now think about this with the dog you are having behavior issues with.

1. You let go, he got the toy (which he wanted) and he won by pulling the toy away from you! Do you see the issue? I have to say this like a broken record. Dogs DON’T JUSTIFY!! In other words, in his mind, he won. He did not at all think oh well they don’t want to play anymore so they are just letting me have it and we can play later!! Do you see the concern? The dog ended the game by TAKING AWAY an item from you!

2. If they pull so hard that you, and you again, let go you have decided to let him run away. Think this through -- what have you said!

3. Or consider the dog that pulls while on walks!! Even though you don’t walk him by the mouth (I hope) he is still learning that pulling you is okay! Remember, It’s a game!! This does not mean that you cannot play this loved game with your dog, it means they need to learn a few things first.

Below is one way that I train dogs and puppies. I have found this to work really well.

This is for the dog that knows a drop command.

Let’s pick a word or cue.

1. “Let Go”, “Leave It”, “Drop it”

2. The dog needs to understand what this means. If they do, then throughout the game ask them to let it go (no pulling it away, saying it once). Praise them when they comply; good boy/girl and continue the game.

3. When the game is over for you, cue them to let it go (without pulling it away, saying it once)

4. Cue “Game Over”

5. Reward with a cookie or some love!!

6. Put the rope up!

Use this game only when you really understand training especially with a dog that is still learning the rules of leadership. Putting the rope up will make the dog so excited to see it that you can use this to your advantage. It also ensures that no-one else is going to play the game and ruin the training. If your dog just needs to pull -- find a non-movable piece of furniture, or post and connect a rope and ball to it. Let the dog use this to play with instead.

Always be safe, use this as an option or advice and train on.
